American Christina McHale moved into the second round of the Mercury Insurance Open with a 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 win over Jarmila Gajdosova on Tuesday.
Fifth-seeded McHale found it tough going against Australia's Gajdosova, winning just seven more points in the match.
McHale needed almost two hours to earn a second round match-up with Japan's Misaki Doi at the WTA Premier tournament in California.
South African eighth seed Chanelle Scheepers also won on Tuesday, overcoming local hope Coco Vandeweghe 6-2 7-6 (7-4).
Scheepers broke Vandeweghe on three occasions and saved nine break points on her way to victory in one hour and 45 minutes.
It was not a good day for Yanina Wickmayer with the Belgian seventh seed retiring before the start of the second set in her match with Taiwan's Yung-Jan Chan. Wickmayer had lost a closely fought opening set 7-6 (10-8) and could not resume due to injury.
In other first round results, Hungary's Melinda Czink knocked out Kazakhstani Sesil Karatantcheva 6-2 4-6 7-5, while Vania King of the USA defeated Kai-Chen Chang 6-1 6-4.
Great Britain's Heather Watson won 6-3 6-3 over Eleni Daniilidou and New Zealand's Marina Erakovic also progressed comfortably thanks to a 6-4 6-0 victory over Anne Keothavong.
