White credits Lehmann for turnaround

White credits Lehmann for turnaround

Cameron White has credited a simple piece of advice from Darren Lehmann as the reason behind his return to international cricket.
White, 28, was at the crossroads of his career after the 2011/12 Big Bash League, in which he averaged below eight with the bat for the Melbourne Stars and not only lost his spot as captain, but also player, in Australia's Twenty20 team.
The Victorian had only recently been bought for $US1.1 million by Indian Premier League franchise, Deccan Chargers, but travelled to India down on form.
It was there that Lehmann – coach of Deccan in addition to his duties with Queensland and the Brisbane Heat – made a remark to White about his batting stance.
"I made (just) one slight adjustment to my batting," said White at the MCG on Tuesday, just a day after he won a recall to Australia's Twenty20 squad for a three-match series against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.
"I used to waggle my bat around in my stance. Now I'm just holding it dead still. That was it. Part of that was going to the IPL and experiencing something different.
"Darren Lehmann ... I went there and worked with. He made that small remark and comment about my back lift and he thought that it was affecting my game. As you do, I listened to a great player and a coach and it made a lot of sense.
"I changed it and it was one of those things that just worked for me. It seems very simple and quite stupid probably as well, but it seems to be working at the moment."
Armed with Lehmann's advice, White scored runs for fun with Deccan, amassing 479 in 13 innings at an average of 43.54.
White then headed to England to play for Northamptonshire in the domestic Twenty20 tournament and enjoyed more success, notching 228 runs in eight innings at an average of 57.
And the four-time Test player believes it was his stint in England that saw him rewarded with selection for his country.
"At the end of the summer last year I sat down with my manager and a few people who were close to me and tried to work out what was the best plan to get into the Australian team," White said.
"County cricket was a part of that. I knew I had IPL locked in but I knew the Australian team was going to be in England. I thought it would be a good opportunity to go England and to score runs in the same country and same conditions that Australia were in at the same time.
"I thought to keep in the forefront of their minds and just be there in the same country was a good idea ... hopefully that paid dividends yesterday."
White was one of six players unveiled as signings for the Stars 2012/13 campaign in the BBL on Tuesday, joining David Hussey, Robert Quiney, Matthew Wade, Englishman Luke Wright and Peter Handscombe.
