Hewitt's Olympic hopes boosted
Lleyton Hewitt and Bernard Tomic had contrasting fortunes in their respective ATP World Tour matches overnight.
Hewitt reached the semi-finals at the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships at Newport while Bernard Tomic's recent struggles continued as he was bundled out of the Mercedes Cup in his birth city Stuttgart.
Hewitt progressed by downing Dudi Sela 6-4 6-3 on Rhode Island’s grass courts, continuing his strong form at the final London Olympics warm-up event.
Hewitt sent five aces past his opponent, while saving six of the eight break points he faced to win in one hour and 19 minutes.
He will now face American Rajeev Ram, who upset second seed Kei Nishikori 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 in their quarter-final.
Tomic, 19 fell in straight sets to the 64th-ranked Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.
The number three seed at the tournament, Tomic, who fell at the first hurdle at Wimbledon and Eastbourne and retired from Halle with a knee injury, burst out of the blocks with a break to take a 2-0 lead.
Tomic looked on track on the clay surface before Bellucci broke back in the seventh game and again to make it 6-5.
The Australian broke again after a 10-minute struggle to force a tie-breaker but fell just short.
Bellucci capitalised in the second set to take a 4-2 lead and held serve when it looked like Tomic might break to close out the second set 6-3.
Bellucci will play Germany's Cedrik-Marcel Stebe after he came from a set down to win 4-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 against former champion Jeremy Chardy.
Argentine second seed Juan Monaco reached the quarter-finals with victory over local hope Tobias Kamke.
The world number 14 cruised to a 6-2 6-3 win, breaking twice in the first set and overcoming a break in the second.
Slovakia's Pavol Cervenak upset German eighth seed Tommy Haas 6-4 6-4, who failed to capitalise on a number of break point opportunities.
